Regina Lester-Harriat, LMSW, is the visionary founder of EmpowerED Advocacy Solutions, a company dedicated to supporting families with children in grades Pre-K through 12 as they navigate the complexities of the special education system. With nearly 25 years of experience in education and social work, Regina brings a wealth of knowledge, passion, and a deep commitment to advocating for the rights and needs of all children.
Regina's professional journey began with her own academic pursuits, earning her undergraduate degree from the prestigious Howard University, an HBCU renowned for its rich history and academic excellence. She then pursued her Master's in Social Work at the UConn School of Social Work, where she currently serves as an assistant professor in-residence. At UConn, Regina teaches graduate-level courses in micro practice and leads the Direct Practice in Schools course, shaping the next generation of social workers who will serve in educational settings.
Before transitioning to higher education, Regina spent two decades working in independent, charter, and public schools. She made a significant impact as a school social worker for Bloomfield Public Schools, where she also served as the team leader of the district’s Student and Family Assistance Centers. In this role, she was responsible for supervising social work interns from several universities, including UConn, Springfield College, the University of St. Joseph, and Central Connecticut State University. Her dedication to improving school climates, particularly for students with disabilities, earned her certification as a safe school climate facilitator and recognition as a former trainer for enhancing school environments.
Regina's commitment to empowering children extends beyond her professional roles. She co-facilitated the first Pretty Brown Girl Club group in Connecticut, an organization devoted to fostering self-acceptance and the overall well-being of girls of color. This work reflects her broader commitment to promoting equity, inclusion, and social justice within education and the community.
As a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Regina's leadership and community engagement have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 100 Women of Color Class of 2022 honor, the Anita Award for outstanding excellence in education, the inaugural UConn School of Social Work certificate of appreciation for outstanding practicum instruction and leadership of the Field Advisory Committee, and the Ella T. Grasso Distinguished Service Award.
At EmpowerED Advocacy Solutions, Regina leverages her extensive experience and deep commitment to children and families to provide expert guidance and support. She is dedicated to ensuring that every child receives the education and resources they need to thrive, advocating for their success every step of the way.
